California Knows How To Party!

Quinton and I went to San Diego, last week, for the blessing of my big sister's little girl. After surviving an ice storm in Tulsa in December, a loooong winter in Chicago that just finished LAST WEEK and feeling like a domestic slave for too long, I was ready for a vacation! We arrived in San Diego on Tuesday and by Friday, I sent Matt a text message from the beach saying, "We need to move here NOW!!!!" - I wasn't joking!

It was SO fun to spend time with my mom and her husband, my big sister's family and my dad and my younger sister and her family who came out from Utah and my little brother who drove down from his busy Hollywood lifestyle in L.A. It was a great way to spend a week!

Quinton needed no introduction to the beach!

As soon as we drove up to the beach, he was struggling to get out of his car seat to run free! We hit the beach and Quinton and I felt like new people!

It was about 72 degrees and not a gray Chicago cloud in sight!

I think we spent about 5 hours on the beach, total and what a splendid 5 hours it was!

Quinton's favorite part of the beach?

He could make a mess with the sand and then run in the ocean to was himself off! What more could a kid want? Plus, all the cup-shaped sandcastles a mom can build so he could smash and stomp each one over and over and over never ceasing to forget his GLEEFUL laughter with each smashing! I love the pure and simple joy I receive from Quinton's imagination!

Color me jealous when this cute little blonde showed up and captured Quinton's attention. Quinton and his first summer love, Kylie, enjoyed playing in the sand and splashing each other. Quinton was cute because if she went too far into the water, he would try and talk her back to the sand and look for her mom to come and get her. How chivalrous!

It was one of the best days I have had in a long time to watch Quinton in the surf and make sandcastles!

Quinton fell asleep after playing on the beach for a couple of hours and a nice beach picnic. We stayed like this, me holding Q asleep under the umbrella for about and hour and a half because I was thoroughly enjoying the sun, beach and people watching. I wanted to try and remember everything about our glorious day on the beach.

That night, my sister rounded us all up for a fantastic BBQ at the beach. We grilled hot dogs and then toasted smores. I can tell you Quinton and I slept VERY well that night!

Here is my adorable nephew, James, with his friends Janie and Iliana. These three were really hamming it up as the sun went down at the beach!

Saturday, Quinton and I spent the day at Sea World. Back in December, when we were in San Diego for my mom's wedding, Matt, Quinton and I went to Sea World and with our admission that day, we received free admission to Sea World for all of 2008! What a bargain!

It was a great day to go and enjoy Sea World, even if there were lots of people. The sun was bright and it was about 72 degrees again and Quinton and I went at our own pace. Quinton LOVES the dolphins and sharks. This picture was taken at the Dolphin show and I wanted to capture Quinton's expression when the first dolphin came out and jumped in the air...classic!

At one point, we passed through a nice quiet area and Quinton founds some friends to run around with. After all of the lines we'd had to stand in, Quinton enjoyed running free.

Quinton and I enjoying the Shamu show.

It's hard to go on vacation without Matt, not just because we miss him, but there's only me to take the pictures, so I try my best to do 'self-portraits' to make sure everyone knows I was there!

During the Shamu show, Quinton tired of sitting down, so we went to this walkway where we could get a really good view of one of the whales. Quinton LOVED watching this whale and I thought we'd never leave!

Here is Quinton towards the end of the day. Do you think he's tired?

Later that evening, the adults were able to go to dinner to celebrate my little brother's birthday. My mom's husband, Tom, has this cool motorcycle with, get this, a SIDECAR!

So Tom offers to take my mom and I in the sidecar! And we went!

I told Matt it's like flying down the road on a sled with wheels because you are so low to the ground!

On the way back from dinner, I almost peed my pants laughing so hard at people's reactions to my mom and I in the sidecar. Every time we stopped at a light, I'd look at the car next to us and people would be pointing at us and then they would start asking questions. One guy couldn't believe there were TWO of us in the little sidecar...good thing my mom is a tiny woman!!!

This is my little brother. He is studying to be a comedian, can you tell?

Several of his birthday gifts were clothing items since he's a single guy and doesn't buy himself too many clothes. So as he opened his gift of TWO pairs of pants, he puts them both on over his pants - at the table - to make sure they fit!

He is such a fun brother to have! There is never a dull moment around Jeff. I'm just glad none of us bought him underwear!

Sunday was my niece's baby blessing. My brother-in-law's mother made her this gorgeous blessing gown! See, I'm excited about making a lopsided apron for a friend, so this blessing gown was beyond comprehension, to me, in time and creativity and skill that went into making it!

My dad, aka SILLY Grandpa, always lives up to his name. Quinton and his cousin, James, had the best time playing with Grandpa!

My dad and baby Charlotte, who goes by the nickname, Zuzu.

Don't you want to eat her up, she's so precious!

My sister, Alyee, is a great mom to her three kids. They have so much fun as a family and she and her husband are so creative. I always love visiting with her and her family!

My brother-in-law, Cliff, is such a great dad. He has more patience than any man I know (cause he's married to my sister!).

I won't lie, I was on vacation and after Zuzu's blessing, Quinton, my mom and I went to Disneyland and met up with my sister, Jessi and her family who drove out from Utah.

The first ride we saw when we made it through the magical Disney gates was the rocket. Quinton HAD to go on the rocket!

I admit, I was a little scared as the thing took off but it was really fun. Quinton wasn't scared a bit...he loved it. I have to say that going to Disney with Quinton made me feel like a kid again.

So the rocket didn't scare Quinton but this Buzz Lightyear ride almost had him in tears!

It was very dark inside and there was loud music, so I don't blame him.

I had to put in this picture of my mom on the Buzz Lightyear ride because it makes me laugh. You can see this big scary robot behind her and it almost looks real!

Poor mom, she never knew what hit her!

I treated our day at Disney like Brazil's Carnivale - a day when the dentist is not watching!

Quinton loved, I mean LOVED the cotton candy. The sweet sugar of it all kept him fueled for the next 5 days, I swear, but hey, were were on vacation so it's okay, right?

My lovely sister, Jessi and her adorable daughter, Sara. Quinton and Sara are so cute together. I wish Sara was Quinton's big sister because she is always so concerned about him, I love it!

Jessi is a nut.

I have no clue where she gets it from!

My mom and Quinton on the submarine Nemo ride. i think when I was a kid, this was like the 'scary octopus under the ocean' ride and now, it's all about Finding Nemo. It was a cute ride but the submarine reminded me too much about an awful glass bottom boat tour we had in Key West...bad memories!

Jessi's daughter, Sara, had this lovely hand fan to keep herself cool in the warm Calirfornia weather. Unfortunately for me, Sara was standing too close to my hair with it and my hair became entangled in the fan.

After much yanking and giggling by my sister, a kind lady offered up her pocket knife scissors and they had to CUT the fan out of my hair! NICE!

I guess it could have been worse, though...

Disney is not Disney until you go on the Dumbo ride.

THIS is why I have a kid!

As low-key as the carousel is, it was Quinton's favorite ride!

We had a great time with his cousins!

Oh and Jessi fancies herself quite the horsewoman...uh huh!

My mom and Sara look so cute!

I actually earned a new appreciation for my mom while at Disney. At one point, my sister and her husband left my mom and I with their 3 kids and I had Quinton, too. So there we are, wrangling 4 kids and I said to my mom, "I have no idea how you and dad managed to take all 5 of us kids to Disney, camping, and everything else you did. how did you do it?" My mom's answer, "We yelled a lot."

Honestly, I don't remember the yelling, I just remember my parents taking us to do fun stuff and giving us great memories. I hope I can do the same for my Quinton and any other sibling who may come along.

Quinton makes me smile! :)

My niece, Taylor, with my sister in the background making a classic Jessi face!

Monday was another day at Sea World with my dad, mom and two sistes and their kids. Too bad there is only one silly grandpa to be shared amongst all of these kids! Quinton was lucky enough to secure a spot on top!

Even now, at home, a week later, Quinton likes to chant Shamu at random times. When they chant Shamu in the show, it's as Shamu is SOAKING the crowd in the Splash Zone. That was one of Quinton's favorite parts!

I can say that more than once, the thought actually came to me, "When I grow up, I want to be a Shamu trainer like these people." - I wonder what I will do when I grow up?

Silly Grandpa in his element. Need I say more?

Here we are watching the Pets Rule! show. The kids loved it and even were able to meet a couple of ducks from the show afterwards.

Jessi and Sara at the penguin exhibit. I do have to recommend this exhibit if you ever go on a hot day. it may be a little stinky but it's dark and COOL in this place!

I love that Quinton enjoys my dad almost as much as I did when I was his age! My dad is like a big kid!

I love to see my dad smile like this, too.

Some of you might have received an email from me about a year and a half ago asking to vote for my dad in a radio contest. It was for a "Grill Makeover" - meaning a free dental makeover for the winner. My dad actually WON and $30,000 later in free dental work, he has this beautiful smile! I won't post the picture of his before cause I know people eat while they are reading blogs and I don't want to be responsible for anything bad happening to your keyboard, but this is a good "After" picture. I just love to see him smile!

And here is the end product of our fabulous trip to California!

One tired kid and a very happy mommy!

We can't wait to go back!

Expanding beyond my numchuck and computer hacking skills!

All aboard the Stacy Train!
Like me, do you ever see something in a store or online and think, "I could make that cheaper and cuter than that!" Well, I actually made something! Two somethings to be exact!
I, unlike my lovely mother-in-law, am NOT a master seamstress when it comes to using a sewing machine. I just like to 'try' stuff and hope it turns out okay. So I just have to share my two projects:
My super creative friend in Tulsa, Sascha, made her daughter the CUTEST aprons that were so girly and fun that even Quinton enjoyed wearing them! So I thought I would attempt to make one like hers for a friend's birthday (see two posts down). Sascha's were even cute but I think I did okay for a first timer!

Sorry if the picture is hard to see but Quinton refused to model this apron! I am so excited it turned out cute - not perfect - but cute! The pink swatch on the front makes two pockets.
Thanks for looking!

This is an "Art Mat" I made!

I saw one at the Land of Nod store and it wasn't cheap. So I thought, I can make that! And I did! The material is kind of like a vinyl tablecloth. Lucky for me, there is a big fabric store near here that has this vinyl in some fun prints. I even used the blue gingham vinyl shown in this picture on the back of the apron I made above. That way, any big spills won't seep onto the clothing behind it! So clever, eh?

The art mat was pretty easy to make and is VERY helpful since Quinton's creativity involves a lot of messes!

Do you know what you were doing 8 years ago, yesterday, May 19th, 2000?
Funny thing, but I DO!

Matt I celebrated 8 years of marriage yesterday!
It seems like only yesterday that we were trendy young hipsters with not too many cares in the world and now, we're hard-working parents and have a few more gray hairs (me, not Matt, unfortunately!).
Here's a fun picture of Matt and his brothers. Matt was #7 of 9 to get married, so by the time we were married, THEY were telling the photographer the best poses!

Our first apartment! Ours is the BASEMENT portion of this big house. It was SMALL but we loved it!

One of first big trips was to Hawaii for a Franklin Covey trip while Matt worked there. This picture was taken while we were biking down a volcano...you should try it sometime!

I found this picture today and seriously couldn't remember Matt ever having had a goatee, but here is the proof! This was taken when we'd been married a year and four months.

Matt and I moved to Chicago in November of 2001. This is a picture of our first Christmas in Chicago!

I just thought I'd throw this in cause it's a fun picture of us and our friends on our 2nd New Years Eve being married.

Oh WHOOPS, this isn't Matt, how did this picture get in there???

And this was us on our Anniversary, yesterday!

Quinton and I met Matt downtown and we made it a fun date for the three of us at the Chicago Navy Pier. We walked, ate and enjoyed the Ferris wheel for the first time, ever! Quinton loved the view from the top!

We couldn't have asked for a better eight years, especially since we've spent the last 2 and a half with Quinton, the other love of our lives!

It was a little chilly and cloudy but a fun night playing around and enjoying one another's company...something I think we can take for granted.

Quinton loves a good train ride and what better way to celebrate our anniversary!

This picture was from the other day and it just makes me laugh!

To all our friends and family, thanks for sharing our lives with us!

Happy Birthday Shout Out to Miss M!

We just had to give a shout out to Miss M for her 4th birthday, yesterday, since she shares her birthday with our anniversary.

Especially since I came across these pictures of her as a teeny tiny baby four years ago!

It's so fun to have great friends like Miss M and her family!

We love you Miss M!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day!

What a great time it was to celebrate mothers and be celebrated as a mother! Matt and Quinton went out of their way to make it special, even with the help of some great friends!

Unfortunately, on this raining drizzly morning, as Matt and I were readying for church, it was apparent Quinton had a nasty cough and a yucky runny nose. Matt volunteered to stay home with Quinton to let him rest and not pass on his cold to the other kids at church. So I sat by myself at church, a little bummed that Matt and Quinton weren't there to sit with me, but it was a teeny bit nice to sit quietly and enjoy the talks for Mother's Day. Just as church started, though, my lovely friend Mrs. R came up from behind me and gave me a nice hug and for a minute, I though that her scarf must have dropped on me but when I looked down, it was a lovely Hawaiian lei! What a treat and surprise!

For Mother's Day the past couple of years, I have sent the special moms in my life leis direct from Hawaii. I just think it's a fun way to show off the special moms in my life with flowers that mirror their beauty. Matt surprised me this year and called Mrs. R's husband, Mr. K, since he is Hawaiian, to see where Matt could buy a lei in Chicago. Mr. K informed Matt that he didn't know of any place in Chicago to buy a lei, but was in fact making a lei for his wife and would try and make one for me! Color me shocked to find out the beautiful lei I was surprised with was also made by Mr. K! He is one very talented husband! He also plays the bass (the tall string instrument, not the guitar) in a Hawaiian music group that performs all over the Chicago area.

Below is a picture of the lei draped over a really cool Mother's Day present from Matt and Quinton. In Quinton's Montessori class he goes to once a week, the teacher had them stamp their handprints on this cute little poem. Matt and Quinton framed the poem and I can't tell you how much I already cherish this! Thanks to Miss Nancy for her thoughtfulness in helping the children make this for their moms!

The words to the poem are:

Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my handprint
On furniture and wall

But everyday I'm growing

(I'll be all grown someday)

And all those tiny hand prints

Will surely fade away.

So here's a final handprint
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When they were very small.

Very cute, huh? It made Matt and I both tear up a little to think that Quinton is already growing so big! Here is a picture of Quinton wearing my shoes around the house...he's just too funny!

Below, Quinton and I after he gave me my other Mother's Day gift, a nice pair of cute pajamas! Matt and Q know exactly what I like :) (I picked them out!)

My other Mother's Day-ish gift was this! A brand new Blackberry Curve! Holding it, I just feel like the 21st Century is beckoning me with open arms! I am SO excited to learn how to use my new toy, I mean highly essential communication tool!

I have been using a piece of crap phone for about two years now. It was to the point that for about 5 months now, I couldn't save any new contacts in my cell phone so I have to keep looking up phone numbers or keep asking people for their phone numbers. But NOW, NOW I am SUPER COOL! When the salesman was holding it, showing me the features, I felt like a kid waiting to ride their shiny new bike for the first time! All I heard was "Blah, Blah, Blah, YOUR BLACKBERRY, Blah, Blah, Blah." And when he handed it over, I heard the angels singing above! Okay, not really but it was a lot like that!

Now that I have my precious, I mean my Blackberry, you can expect a lot more annoying phone calls - and possibly emails from yours truly!

SUPASTAR!

I forgot to show you all Matt and Quinton's crafty treat for me from my birthday. Matt and Q were in the basement for about 2 hours, the night before my birthday, putting together this gem:

Pretty fantastic, eh?

Oh yeah...I'm Officially Old Now!

Okay, I'm only sort-of kidding.
32
There, I said it and it will probably be the last birthday where I admit my real age. One of my good friends, who will remain nameless to keep her sham going but I will call Boom-Boom, tells her 'new' friends she's 29, but she's really my age - or will be in about 6 weeks. Too bad I knew too many people here in Chicago when we moved back to start such a lie, but it would have been fun!

My b-day was last week, April 29th.

It's not just the number, it's the fact that I wake up sore when the most exercise I did the day before was cleaning the house! But I tell myself that it is a BIG house.

Anyway, I want to say thanks to all of my friends and family who I talked to or heard from or received something in the mail from...it was a great birthday!

I started out the day hunting down treasures in Winnetka's Spring Clean Up days and then met my friend Erin S. for brunch at one of the best pancake houses in the world, Walker Brothers. She treated Quinton and me to a super delish brunch. She had her little girl, Sophia with her and I honestly think Quinton has a crush on her.

Then, Quinton and I went home, where he was nice enough to play trains with me and let me be the conductor once!

Then, towards the end of the day, a friend sent me an email reminding me it was Ben & Jerry's Customer Appreciation Day and they were giving out free ice cream cones! So of course, I put Quinton in the car and drove to the nearest Ben & Jerry's! Too bad for Quinton he fell asleep and stayed asleep as I stood in line for 10 minutes to get my cone. I told the girl scooping the ice cream that he was being shy and proceeded to order Quinton a scoop in a cup (free). Even though it was my birthday, I didn't eat both scoops, I saved Quinton's scoop for Matt who was at home when we got back.

After my ice cream, I met up with Erin S. at a massage place where she treated us both to one hour massages! That was pure heaven. PURE HEAVEN, I say!

In case any of you are thinking you need a friend like Erin S., BACK OFF, she's all mine! :)

Then, I met Quinton and Matt for dinner at a Japanese place we'd been recommended to and it was soooo yummy! I barely had room, afterwards, for my requisite piece of Baskin Robbins ice cream cake, but I managed to eat a small piece!

Later, I saw that my friend, Mrs. R, had put a shout out for my birthday on her blog, which I LOVED. It was so sweet along with all the other well wishes from friends and family, I didn't mind turning a year older to realize that I am beyond blessed in the friends and family department! Thanks everyone!

Here are some fun pictures:

At the park on Sunday, enjoying all that spring has to offer!

Quinton wearing a birthday present from my mother-in-law to me...don't worry, he hated wearing it!

Matt and Quinton hanging out.

Prince Q of Burger King. He is growing up so fast. I'll be sad when HE turns 32!!!

Post Script - It was a year ago, on April 30th, that Quinton and I were in a car accident. A woman ran a red light as Quinton and I were driving home from swim class. Matt was out of town and it was a really scary accident. Quinton and I were okay, but last Wednesday, on the 'anniversary', I really had to stop and thank Heavenly Father for keeping Quinton and I safe that day and for all of the blessings he's given to my family. Just wanted to share that with all of you.

Happy 45th Birthday!

Dear Matt, Happy 45 th  Birthday! You are still missed and loved dearly. I would like to think this is when your mid-life crisis should...
