Dear Matt,
Today is the last day of 2015. This was the first full calendar year without you, which meant an end to the “firsts” without you and a start to many “seconds” with you missing. You are missed so much…I like to think you are always nearby but it doesn’t make your absence any easier. My heart hurts most days knowing that you SHOULD be here and I want to scream IT’S NOT FAIR! But you would be first to remind me that fair or not, it’s not worth dwelling on when there is so much life to live for the boys and me. For me, most days are still hard...sometimes I am okay and even used to your absence and other days, seeing couples and families doing everyday things, without much worry makes me feel the impact of your loss all over again.
Of the many, many, many hard things I have done since you’ve been gone, addressing the man whose choices ultimately lead to your death, last March, was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I wondered how I got to that courtroom with our families there and a man wishing his life had been taken and yours spared. I laughed, as I’m sure you did, when your mom, in her heartfelt impact statement to the judge said that she missed you and that you were the “salsa to her taco.” I’m not exactly sure I know what that means but your mom misses you, too.
Your birthday was so very hard for me since we had discussed plans for your big 4-0! That ride home from Denver, 4 days before you were killed, we had talked about anniversary plans and your birthday plans…a week later was your funeral. The best way I could make it a positive day for our families and friends was to have as many people as would help us commit Random Acts of Kindess…imagine my surprise as the instances of kind acts rolled in from all over the world, I know you would be humbled to know that you are a force for good, even when you are not here, physically.
You would have loved the memorial ride Ernie and our families put together to remember you! So many of our friends rode, volunteered and celebrated you on that beautiful spring morning! The boys love to wear that "dad" t-shirts and I really loved spending time with so many of your high school friends, RLG colleagues and extended family members. Much like the memorial ride, the LOTOJA ride in your honor, organized by Isaac was certainly a highlight. I know you were there with me...I know you were cheering Isaac and the others on towards the finish line. I am humbled that so many of our friends help to keep your memory alive and our boys get to see your good example even when you are not here.
This year was also Sawyer’s first birthday without you here to celebrate and it was easy to remember last year, when we picked out a bike for him in Casper and took him to the park and you helped him ride his pedal bike for the first time, cheering him on with that proud dad sparkle in your eyes! But for Quinton and Gavin, it was their second birthdays without you and it wasn’t any easier than the first. I hope you don’t mind me spoiling them…maybe I am trying to make up for your absence but you also know I have always spoiled our boys. They remind me so much of you and for that, I am grateful…and overwhelmed at the responsibility of trying to raise them into strong, determined men, like you were.
Our 15th anniversary passed and that was especially hard. You and I had dreamed of going to Paris for our anniversary this year. Instead, I took roses to your grave and shamelessly wept for our first anniversary apart. I know you would want me to be happy but I hope you don’t mind that I take this time to grieve for you and what I thought my life would be like right now…with you. I miss talking to you. I miss your text messages throughout the day. I miss sharing the weight of the word’s problems with you and your reassuring hugs. I miss being frustrated with you leaving your socks on the floor. I miss knowing I have a date every weekend, whether we took advantage of it or not! I miss you strong hands wrestling the boys and reading to them at night!
The boys miss you too. Gavin will pass a very difficult milestone soon but I will be the only one to notice: he will have spent more time here without you than with you alive. I don’t that’s fair at all. I’ve said it before and I can say it again, none of this is fair. I hope you see me trying to do my best to raise these boys and forgive me when I lose patience sometimes. I never ever imagined I would be doing this alone. I am so grateful for my family who has stepped in where they can to help.
Quinton is so much like you, it is amazing to see the young man he is becoming. He does not love wrestling like you did as a youth but I suspect some of that comes from missing you while so many dads help their boys. He has your sense of humor and that same mischievous smile when he’s up to something. He is learning to do hard things but I don’t want him to grow up too fast. School is hard for him sometimes because he gets anxious and emotional thinking of you and saying goodbye to you in the hospital. I am so grateful for his teachers and counselors who are patient and firm with him and help me guide him.
Sawyer is a wonderful ball of energy! I was shocked one day to watch him remove the empty toilet paper roll in my bathroom and put the new roll on! You were always annoyed with me when I would start a new roll and not take off the empty roll…so imagine my surprise when my 5 year-old did EXACTLY what you would have done! It makes me smile every time he does it! Sawyer DOES love wrestling and you would be so proud of him! I really wish you were here for this part because I know nothing of wrestling and feel like a fish out of water at his tournaments! He took second place at his first tournament and you would have thought he won state! Sawyer still asks where you are…I am sure it is hard for him to understand and when I tell him that you are in heaven, he asks if you have your phone so we can call you…oh how I wish that were true!
Gavin is the salve to my broken heart. His innocence and lack of sadness helps me get up everyday and motivates me to give our boys the best life possible. His laugh and playful spirit is a breath of fresh air, every single day and for that I am grateful. He loves to wrestle me and I’m sure will be a force on the wrestling mats someday, like you. Moving to a new house with a park and lots of room to play was one of the best tings I could have done for Gavin! He loves to run and play and I love to do it with him.
I wasn’t entirely sure I had made the right decision to move us again, but after being in the new house for a few weeks, we were at the park on a beautiful late summer evening, when a group of men your age assembled to play soccer. At that moment, I knew I made the right decision and it was finally clear to me why I loved this house so much…YOU would have loved it too. This would have been OUR dream house. With the park, the view and the feeling of ‘being home’, I know you would have loved this house just as much as I do.
I am grateful to the family and friends we have as they support and love our little family. I am reminded daily of the influence you have had on others and I am grateful that I have been by your side for the last 17 years to witness your work here on earth. Even though the holidays were hard, we managed to surround ourselves with people who loves us so much!
I have to go now, the natives are restless. I look forward to the hope that the next year brings for us but approach 2016 anxiously…another year without you seems incredibly difficult. I hope to make you proud. I love you forever.
Your loving wife,
Stacy
